Goedeker’s History

Started as Goedeker Radio and Television Repair in June 1951 in his basement, founder Ben Goedeker focused on providing the best possible service at the lowest price to his friends and neighbors. In 1953 Goedeker’s expanded into sales, first with electronics then appliances. Our first location was a 1,200 sqft showroom located in south St. Louis. This location proved sufficient until 1970 when Goedeker’s expanded into a 3500 sq ft location also located in South St. Louis.

Ben Goedeker believed that customer service was more than just being polite, it was carrying a large selection of quality name brand appliances and electronics at the lowest possible price. Ben also realized to be successful he must have a knowledgeable sales staff to help educate his customers to make the best purchase possible. Ben’s life was tragically cut short at the age of 50.

Steve Goedeker, Ben’s eldest son took over the business at this time. Goedeker’s quickly became a household name in St. Louis and in 1989 Steve Goedeker expanded the business to a 22,000 sqft location. In 1990, two of Steve’s siblings, Mike and Janet, joined Steve at Goedeker’s. Mike was brought in to manage the sales department and Janet to run the accounting department. In St. Louis, Goedeker’s is the place to go for new appliances or TV’s. With Goedeker’s vast selection, knowledgeable sales staff, unbeatable low prices and excellent customer service it grew to become the largest privately owned appliance and electronic dealer in Missouri.

Goedeker’s was growing so fast it needed another St. Louis location. In 1998 Steve opened a new headquarters. Located in the St. Louis West County suburb of Ballwin, Goedeker’s opened its 50,000 sqft megastore and added furniture and mattresses at this time. Shortly thereafter we added on to this location with a distribution center.

In 2008 Steve decided to add the same great level of customer service, vast selection of products and excellent pricing to the internet. In July of 2008, Number1Direct was created and already we have thousands upon thousands of satisfied nationwide customers. Components of Home Theater Systems:

• Receiver: These are the “hub’ of your home theater systems and mange audio from your TV, HDTV, Blu-Ray players, DVD players and HD-DVD players and sends the signal and power to your speakers (5.1 or higher). For more on receivers, click here .

• Center Speaker: Sits right below or above your television and produces much of the vocal audio from your movie or show along with sound effects that would originate from in front of you if you were actually in the action.
• Front Side Speakers: Sits to the right and left of the television and a wide array for sounds from your TV shows or movies including vocals, sound effects and more. These are the workhorses of your home theater and would be the ones that play a 2 channel/stereo content piece.
• Surround Speakers: These speakers sit on the side of the room and produce all if the sound effects, vocals, and everything else that make a surround sound system what it is. Without these speakers, you really would not have a home theater system.
• Rear Speakers: Just like the surround speakers but would sit behind your couch or chair in the rear of the room and would provide audio that would come from behind you in the show/movie to make you feel like you’re part of the action. A system would need to be 6.1 or higher to have a rear speaker.
• Televisions: For the perfect picture, you’ll need to have a television to match the your home theater component requirements that could be 720p, 1080p, LCD, DLP, Plasma.
• DVD Player: With more and more of your favorite move coming out on DVD, you will want to add a DVD player to your theater. There are a lot of choice to choose from with up-conversion DVD players, Blu-Ray players, Blu-Ray recorders, DVD recorders, and gaming systems like PlayStation 3 and X-Box with DVD/Blu-Ray players built-in.
